About Our Organization

Smile Lanka emerged as a beacon of hope in the aftermath of the devastating Tsunami wave that struck Sri Lanka on December 26, 2004. As part of Smile International’s compassionate efforts to aid those affected in Hambantota, Smile Lanka was formally registered as an organization in February 2005. Since its inception, Smile Lanka has remained dedicated to rebuilding lives and communities shattered by the tragedy, focusing on providing crucial support in education, healthcare, and community development. Rooted in the spirit of resilience and solidarity, Smile Lanka continues to uplift and empower the lives of those impacted, embodying the ethos of healing and progress in the face of adversity.

  1. 2004 December

    Smile Lanka History is attached with the Tsunami wave which hit Sri Lanka on the 26th of December 2004. This devastating wave badly affected the coastal belt of Sri Lanka. Hambantota is situated 240 km, away from the Capital of Sri Lanka. Smile International was one of the organizations that came forward to assist the affected people in Hambantota and other areas of Sri Lanka. The founding members of Smile International Rev. Clive Doubleday and Mrs. Ruth Doubleday played a crucial role in responding to the devastating Tsunami that hit Sri Lanka in December 2004. The efforts of Clive, Ruth and Gorden who travelled to different parts of Sri Lanka to assist tsunami-affected families were significant. They ministered to nearly 2,000 families in those areas, and their visits were appreciated by local pastors, government agents, and village leaders, as this highlights the positive impact of their efforts and their ability to collaborate with local stakeholders. After a discussion with Local churches and similar service organizations and taking into consideration their experiences, they decided to embark on a long-term project in Sri Lanka and Hambantota was selected to initiate the project.  Smile International Invited Rev. Heshan and Ronali to serve as part-time Local Coordinators, voluntarily to carry out this work.

  2. 2005 February

    The significant progress and achievements of Smile International in Sri Lanka, which later became registered as Smile Lanka: February 2005: The organization began its regular service to the people affected by the tsunami. 2005: The organization welcomed its first volunteer workers team from the UK, consisting of individuals from the British Police.  Smile Lanka rented out a house in Hambantota town and started their long-term mission work among the children because Smile Lanka believes that if we could change children today, society would change tomorrow. They started a preschool and after-school care project among tsunami-affected children. At the beginning, this project was started for 30 children.

  3. 2006 June

    2006 June 12th Smile Lanka obtained its first registration with the Sri Lankan government. Smile Lanka (Guarantee) Limited was registered. 2006 June 31st was another milestone for Smile Lanka, property was purchased to Smile Lanka's name on this day from nearby Hambantota town

  4. 2009 January

    2009 January 28th was another milestone for Smile Lanka because that was the day Smile Lanka received Sri Lankan Government Non-Governmental Organization registration. 

  5. 2019 January

    2019 January was a significant milestone for Smile Lanka. This transition required careful planning and fundraising efforts to sustain the project. Smile Lanka's board explored various fundraising strategies, including seeking grants, donations, sponsorships, or partnerships with other organizations locally and internationally.

Providing preschool education and uplift the nutrition level for children of low income families
Providing extra help and uplifting the nutrition level of the school-going children of low-income families.
Conducting programs for women who are the heads of households
Provision of prison services
Providing self-employment training opportunities to women
Raising awareness about cancer and empowering survivors to face life
Conducting awareness programs among the residents of Samagipura village, especially among the children
Providing various services for underprivileged families and especially for their children
